European Road Trip - Summer '08

Home | Up

This is information pertaining to my "European Road Trip '08" - something I am planning for myself and a few friends for the summer of 2008

Timing: The plan would be to leave the UK on a Friday and return eight days later on a Saturday evening (6 days off work - unless encompassing a bank holiday weekend).

Outbound: The starting point is Reading, crossing at Dover, with the route being via Venice (see link) and Rijeka (see link).

Destination: the Lake Plitvice National Park in Croatia (see link)

Return journey: Salzburg (see link) and the Nurburgring (see link).

Critical dates: Avoid school holidays and make sure the 'Ring is open on the return journey

Stopovers:      1. Somewhere near the Stelvio Pass (Saturday night)
                        2. Venice (Sunday/Monday nights)
                        3. Plitvice (Tuesday/Wednesday nights)
                        4. Salzburg (Thursday night)
                        5. The 'Ring (Friday night)

Untouched map:

My map:

Example pics -

1. Stelvio Pass

2. San Bernardino Pass

3. Venice

4. Rijeka

5. Plitvice

6. Salzburg

7. The 'Ring

Update:

I've been on ViaMichelin.com and worked out some times and distances for various stages of the trip (all costs in EUROS)

1. Reading to Venice via Stelvio Pass and San Bernadino pass
    15h42m, 954 miles, 58.00 tolls, 259.46 fuel, 27.00 road tax (Swiss)

2. Venice to Rijeka to Plitvice
    05h29m, 253 miles, 11.41 tolls, 85.91 fuel

3. Plitvice to Salzburg
    05h54m, 335 miles, 18.85 tolls, 105.01 fuel, 7.60 road tax (Austrian)

4. Salzburg to Nurburgring
    06h08m, 431 miles, 0 tolls, 115.72 fuel

5. Nurburgring to Reading
    07h17m, 392 miles, 0 tolls, 103.96 fuel

So, in theory, total mileage is 2365, total toll and road tax cost is 122.86, and total fuel cost is 670.06 (euros!), which equates to about £550 for fuel and tolls.

Stage maps:

Overnight stays:

1. Somewhere near Stelvio Pass - 60 euros approx

2. 3. Venice - 60 euros for a twin or double

4. 5. Plitvice - various, around 50 euros for a twin or double

6. Salzburg - various, around 100 euros for a twin or double

7. Nurburgring - various, around 70 euros for a double or twin

Total accomodation costs, approx 500 euros for two people, around £350

Costs:

Around £550 for fuel and tolls

Around £350 for accomodation

Around £40 for SpeedFerries

So for the whole trip, working on the assumption that each car carries two people, is £940 per car (plus food)

Outbound: The starting point would be in the southern part of the UK, perhaps from Dover or Portsmouth, with the route being via places like La Rochelle (see link), the Millau Bridge as seen on Top Gear (see link), Marseille (see link), Monaco (see link), Venice (see link) and Rijeka (see link).

Stopovers:      1. La Rochelle (Friday night)
                        2. Marseille (Saturday night)
                        3. Venice (Sunday and Monday nights)
                        4. Plitvice (Tuesday and Wednesday nights)
                        5. Salzburg (Thursday night)
                        6. The 'Ring (Friday night)
                        7. The 'Ring or the ferry (Saturday night or Sunday morning)

1. La Rochelle

2. Millau Bridge

3. Marseille

1. Reading to La Rochelle
    09h18m, 542 miles, 38.70 tolls, 144.07 fuel

2. La Rochelle to Millau Bridge to Marseille
    09h10m, 553 miles, 38.80 tolls, 149.32 fuel

3. Marseille to Monaco to Venice
    08h10m, 490 miles, 52.00 tolls, 140.75 fuel

So, in theory, total mileage is 2996, total toll and road tax cost is 167.36, and total fuel cost is 844.74 (euros!), which equates to about £700 for fuel and tolls.
